A Cap Tops Off Labor Day Weekend

Monticello, AR- After a very mild night in which the mercury had trouble falling into the lower to mid 70's, temperatures on Monday, Labor Day 2009 managed to climb again into the 90's on the back of partly to mostly sunny skies.

Although some parts of the Midsouth received an appreciable amount of precip when it did rain, many regions south of the I-30 corridor have received little or no rainfall, thanks to a "cap" situated over the Midsouth trailing back into the Arklatex area. A "cap" or "lid" is nothing more than a layer of warm air aloft, several thousand feet up, which inhibits thunderstorm development, even in the presence of very unstable air(which we do NOT have).

Even with the cap in place most of the upcoming week, and isolated thundershower still cannot be ruled out.

Later in the week a cold front will approach the Midsouth and could again increase our precipitation chances.

Winter's Last Blast ?

If you were looking for a reminder that it was still winter, look no further than to the Midsouth forecast for the next few days.



A late season cold front passed through the area early Wednesday morning and has brought with it some very chilly air-for March standards, and with it some very cold liquid precipitation. Forecast lows in the mid to upper 30's and highs in the 40's for the rest of the work week.



If Puxatawney Phil was correct, this should be "curtain call" time for Ol' Man Winter !

The high today, which was really reached after midnight before the cold front passed, was 71 and our low for today is our current temperature, 42 degrees.

You are now entering the "quasi" zonal zone!

This upcoming week the Midsouth will be the battleground between the frigid and warm air masses. Although our weather pattern is trying to go zonal (which means weather patterns are generally moving from west to east), the warm air to our south will be over running the cold air to the north, making for some potential yucky weather for those of is in the Midsouth. Even severe weather cannot be totally ruled out late next week.

A Beautiful Hint of Fall....

After an unsettled couple of weeks, the Midsouth will be blessed with some gorgeous weather conditions this week. It was a pleasant 55 degrees this morning on my back porch. Fall is almost here !!!!
